A successful painting balances abstract design and specific details that come from observation.
I paint outdoors for several reasons: to capture the effects and quality of natural light, to force myself to make quick decisions, and to come away with an impression that is distinct, but often only partly finished, to serve as the starting point and foundation for painting.

Outdoors and in the studio I bridge the gap - between transcribing information and what I think or want the painting to be about - with imagination.
